Denmark releases 2027 nitrogen emission limits for farmers
Most Danish farmers can now access their nitrogen emission limits for 2027, marking a milestone in the implementation of a new regulatory model designed to restore life to fjords and coastal waters. The Ministry of Nature and Animal Welfare stated that while most farmers will see more lenient limits compared to preliminary summer figures, some will face stricter conditions.
To support the transition, the government has allocated a compensation framework of 1.92 billion DKK. This fund was recently increased by 692 million DKK following assessments from the University of Copenhagen regarding the costs of nitrogen regulation.
A small group of farmers will not receive their specific limits until late October, as approximately 5,900 hectares of land withdrawal projects and 90 hectares of mini-wetlands have not yet been integrated into the calculations. Minister for Nature and Animal Welfare Christian Rabjerg Madsen noted that the Agency for Green Land Conversion and Water Environment is expected to adjust limits for these specific areas once the data is processed.
