Denmark researchers assess agriculture's impact on fisheries

Researchers indicate that while nitrogen runoff from agriculture affects fish life in Danish fjords and coastal waters, it likely plays a minor role in the overall decline of the Danish fishing industry. Experts note that the majority of commercial fishing occurs in the North Sea and other open waters at depths exceeding 20 meters, where high water exchange limits the impact of nutrient runoff.

Factors such as rising sea temperatures, oxygen depletion, and algae growth are also significant drivers of declining fish stocks. While the Danish Environmental Protection Agency attributes approximately 70 percent of nitrogen discharge to agriculture, scientists emphasize that it is difficult to quantify the exact economic or biological cost specifically attributable to farming versus other factors like climate change, fishing pressure, and predator populations.
