Denmark to Boost Military Presence in the Faroe Islands
Denmark and the autonomous Faroe Islands have signed an agreement to gradually increase Danish military presence in the archipelago. Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus said the deal signals Denmark’s serious commitment to collective security in the region, while Faroese Minister Bardur á Steig Nielsen welcomed the enhanced cooperation.
The arrangement may involve joint exercises between Danish forces and the Faroese Coast Guard, patrols by F‑35 fighter jets, deployment of frigates or transport aircraft, and support for NATO maritime initiatives. The Faroe Islands sit midway between Denmark and Iceland, a strategic point for monitoring the Greenland‑Iceland‑UK sea lane used by Russia’s Northern Fleet to reach the North Atlantic, underscoring the NATO‑Arctic focus of the move.
