Denmark-Faroe Islands political and security relations

The relationship between Denmark and the Faroe Islands is characterized by evolving cooperation in security and debates over political autonomy.

In early August 2026, Denmark and the Faroe Islands signed an agreement to gradually increase Danish military presence in the archipelago. This arrangement includes potential joint exercises, F-35 fighter jet patrols, and the deployment of frigates or transport aircraft to support NATO maritime initiatives. Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus stated the deal signals a “serious commitment to collective security in the region.”

Simultaneously, the Faroe Islands are seeking to redefine their relationship with the Kingdom of Denmark to increase autonomy. Following the March 2026 elections, Prime Minister Benir Johannesen has advocated for greater independence, arguing that the current structure does not represent a “union of three equal partners.” While the archipelago maintains its own parliament, key responsibilities such as defense and foreign policy remain under Copenhagen’s jurisdiction. The new leadership aims to represent Faroese interests globally with less oversight from Danish ministers.
