Denmark to tighten citizenship and refugee protection rules
The Danish government has announced plans to tighten requirements for obtaining citizenship and providing protection to refugees. Under a new legislative proposal, future citizenship applicants will be vetted for anti-democratic attitudes. Immigration and Integration Minister Morten Bødskov stated that citizenship should be reserved for those loyal to Denmark and its values, specifically excluding those who support terrorism or oppose rights such as those of the LGBTQ+ community.
Additionally, Denmark is moving to restrict temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees. Following models used by Norway and Switzerland, Denmark has identified fourteen regions in western and central Ukraine, excluding Kyiv, as relatively safe for civilians. Refugees arriving from these designated areas will no longer be eligible for automatic temporary protection, which grants the right to live and work legally in the host country. Minister Bødskov noted that the influx of refugees has placed significant pressure on local municipalities regarding housing and integration efforts.
