Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meal program faces safety and data updates
Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program is facing significant challenges following multiple food poisoning incidents and administrative updates. In Pati Regency, the number of suspected poisoning victims has reached 424, with dozens requiring hospitalization. In response, the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) and local government are evaluating 172 nutrition service units, with officials stating that units failing to meet safety standards will face suspension or permanent closure.
Simultaneously, the BGN has updated its beneficiary data, resulting in the removal of 1,653 educational institutions from the program. According to BGN Head Sudaryono, these excluded units primarily include international private schools and institutions that are financially independent of government School Operational Assistance (BOS) funds. The agency is currently working to ensure the program reaches the remaining 240,000 schools in its expansion phase.
Legal and safety concerns are also mounting. In North Sumatra, 60 parents have filed a police complaint following a mass illness incident in Karo. Additionally, the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) has recommended that the program transition to school-based canteens to better ensure food hygiene and safety standards.
