National Nutrition Agency faces challenges with Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meal program
Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program is facing significant challenges following multiple mass food poisoning incidents. In Lombok Tengah, West Nusa Tenggara, 352 students fell ill after consuming program meals, prompting the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) to consider suspending the responsible service unit. Similarly, in Pati Regency, Central Java, the number of suspected victims rose to 424, with 59 individuals requiring ongoing hospital treatment. In response to the Pati incident, the BGN and local government are evaluating 172 nutrition service units to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Beyond health crises, the program is undergoing administrative and legal scrutiny. The BGN has updated its beneficiary data, resulting in the exclusion of 1,653 educational units, primarily international private schools or those financially independent of government funds. In North Sumatra, 60 parents have filed a police complaint regarding children falling ill, marking a legal challenge to the flagship initiative. Additionally, the Attorney General's Office is investigating potential corruption related to the program's governance. To improve safety, the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) has recommended that meals be prepared in school canteens to ensure freshness and hygiene.
