Denuvo sues anonymous cracker over 26 game DRM bypasses

Denuvo, a provider of digital rights management (DRM) software, has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against an anonymous individual or entity known as ‘Voices38’. The company alleges that the defendant has bypassed its anti-tamper technology in at least 26 video games, including titles such as ‘Black Myth: Wukong’, ‘Resident Evil Requiem’, ‘Hogwarts Legacy’, and ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’.

Rather than a direct copyright infringement claim, the lawsuit invokes the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by targeting the circumvention of digital protections. Denuvo is seeking financial damages and a permanent injunction to prevent the removal of its anti-tamper software from any past, present, or future video games.

Because the true identity of ‘Voices38’ remains unknown, the legal action may serve as a mechanism to subpoena service providers such as Valve, Reddit, and Discord to uncover the defendant's real-world information. If successful, the case could set a precedent for how DRM providers use the judiciary to combat software cracking and the distribution of bypass tools.
