Denuvo sues anonymous hacker over game protection bypass

Denuvo, the Austrian company providing anti-piracy technology for the video game industry, has filed a lawsuit in a United States federal court against an anonymous cracker known as ‘voices38’. The legal action, filed in the Northern District of California, alleges that the individual or group bypassed Denuvo’s anti-tamper protections for at least 26 games, including titles such as Hogwarts Legacy and Black Myth: Wukong.

Because Denuvo does not own the copyrights to the games themselves, it cannot sue for traditional copyright infringement. Instead, the company is utilizing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which prohibits the circumvention of digital locks used to control access to protected works. Denuvo argues that these actions harm its business model of providing security services to major publishers.

The lawsuit includes various digital identifiers, such as Discord IDs, Reddit accounts, and Steam profiles. Denuvo intends to seek court orders to compel platforms like Valve, Reddit, and Discord to release user data to identify the cracker. Despite the legal proceedings, the individual known as ‘voices38’ has reportedly dismissed the lawsuit on Reddit, stating that their work will continue.
