Department of Justice announces major crime and fraud enforcement actions
The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a series of aggressive enforcement actions targeting violent crime and large-scale fraud. In St. Louis, an eight-week initiative known as ‘Operation Show Me Justice’ resulted in 435 arrests, the seizure of 166 firearms, 81 kilograms of illegal drugs, and over $1.25 million in suspected criminal currency.
Simultaneously, the DOJ’s National Fraud Enforcement Division conducted a six-week nationwide tax fraud crackdown. This initiative involved 76 defendants and addressed more than $490 million in alleged or established losses to the federal government. The crackdown targeted various schemes, including fraudulent refund claims and unpaid employment taxes.
To bolster these efforts, the DOJ issued a memorandum outlining new enforcement priorities for corporate fraud affecting government programs. This includes the creation of a new Corporate Enforcement Section to monitor investigations and oversee compliance with plea agreements. The department is also expanding data-driven identification of fraud through its National Fraud Detection Center.
