US Department of Justice tax fraud enforcement
Overview
The U.S. Department of Justice completed its first nationwide tax fraud surge, resulting in legal actions against 76 defendants. The six-week operation involved 35 U.S. Attorney Offices and targeted schemes involving more than $490 million in estimated intended losses to the federal government.
Federal prosecutors filed 23 new charging actions against 31 defendants, involving over $350 million in alleged intended losses, while 45 defendants faced trials, guilty pleas, or sentencing in cases totaling nearly $140 million. The crackdown addressed crimes including fraudulent refund claims, unpaid employment taxes, sham trusts, and bogus COVID-era credits.
Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the surge uncovered only ‘the tip of the iceberg’ and emphasized a commitment to expanding investigations. Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald noted that since the creation of the National Fraud Enforcement Division 190 days ago, the DOJ has announced over 1,000 major fraud enforcement actions across the country.
To bolster ongoing efforts, the DOJ issued a memorandum outlining new enforcement priorities for corporate fraud affecting government programs. This includes the establishment of a new Corporate Enforcement Section to monitor investigations and oversee compliance with plea agreements. Additionally, the department is expanding its data-driven identification of fraud through its National Fraud Detection Center.
