Department of Justice holds summit for murder victims

The National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, observed on September 25, has prompted federal action and reflection on violent crime trends. The U.S. Department of Justice held the first summit for victims of violent crime, bringing together survivors and families to discuss community safety and the impact of homicide.

During the summit, Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the ANGEL Grant Program (Assistance to Neighborhoods and Governments for Law Enforcement). This program provides up to $500,000 to local law enforcement agencies, with applications open until October 20, 2026. The initiative is aimed at addressing crimes involving undocumented immigrants, violent offenders, and illicit drugs.

In California, homicide trends have fluctuated significantly over the last five years. While statewide data shows gradual declines in 2024–2025, certain areas such as Los Angeles, Riverside, and Orange County continue to face challenges related to gang violence, domestic violence, and firearm accessibility. Key drivers of these trends include economic instability, substance abuse, and mental health crises.
