US DOJ ANGEL grant program implementation

Overview

The U.S. Department of Justice has introduced the Assisting Neighborhoods and Governments with Enforcement of Laws (ANGEL) Grant Program, a $25 million initiative. The program provides grants of up to $500,000 per agency to assist local law enforcement with tasks including locating undocumented individuals who have committed crimes, gathering gang intelligence, and investigating human and drug trafficking.

Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward, Jr. noted the funding is intended to counter sanctuary policies that the administration claims affect public safety. This initiative faced opposition from the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, which described the DOJ’s claims regarding the impact of sanctuary policies on murder and trafficking investigations as ‘callous and false.’

During a summit for victims of violent crime held on the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, Attorney General Todd Blanche formally announced the program, noting that applications remain open until October 20, 2026. The initiative specifically targets crimes involving violent offenders, illicit drugs, and undocumented immigrants.
