Depot chain to shut stores in German cities including Halle and Konstanz
The German home‑decor retailer Depot, operated by GDC Deutschland GmbH, has entered a second insolvency proceeding. After filing for self‑administration on 12 May 2026, the company announced the closure of its Halle store on 25 July 2026 and the Konstanz outlet by the end of July. Management cited rising import duties, persistent consumer restraint on non‑food goods, and intense price competition from low‑cost Asian e‑commerce platforms such as Temu as key drivers of the renewed financial collapse.
The shutdown is part of a nationwide reduction of the chain’s footprint, with additional closures planned in Bayreuth, Kamen, Bühl, Cottbus, Karlsruhe, Hamburg, Magdeburg and other towns. Of the roughly 155 remaining stores and its online shop, about 1,200 staff members will continue to be paid through an insolvency‑fund advance. Gift vouchers issued before 12 May are currently not redeemable, but holders can register the voucher number online to file a claim against the insolvency estate.
