Derby and Kidsgrove launch major town‑centre revitalisation schemes

Derby City Council has announced a £1.5 million programme to revamp Sadler Gate, a historic city‑centre street described as the "beating heart of the city". The plan includes new paving, lighting, public‑art installations, spill‑out seating and cycle‑parking, aiming to create a warmer, more visitor‑friendly environment. Local traders welcomed the scheme, with Danny Drummond of Threadz saying, "It's good here but it needs a bit more care and attention," and Councillor Gurkiran Kaur noting the importance of improving public spaces as Derby grows.

In Kidsgrove, Newcastle‑on‑Trent Borough Council is progressing a £16.9 million public‑realm project centred on King Street. Works feature new planting beds, widened steps, a redesigned parking area with free short‑stay spaces, and a one‑way traffic system to improve safety. Additional upgrades include raised crossings, new streetlights, drainage repairs and free parking provisions. The scheme, part of the Kidsgrove Town Deal programme, is slated for completion by February next year. Borough leader Jonathan Gullis said the improvements will make the area "safer and more attractive".
