Derby public realm regeneration

Overview

In late July 2026 Derby City Council unveiled a plan to pedestrianise The Strand, a historic Victorian thoroughfare, as part of a broader public‑realm strategy aimed at boosting footfall around cultural venues and night‑time attractions. The proposal included a suite of streetscape changes such as converting the Wardwick to a two‑way road, relocating a memorial garden, narrowing Full Street, removing parking, and creating new river‑garden access.

A few days later, the council announced a £1.5 million revamp of Sadler Gate, another key city‑centre street. The scheme focuses on new paving, lighting, public‑art installations, spill‑out seating and cycle‑parking to make the area more welcoming for visitors and traders. At the same time, nearby Kidsgrove (Newcastle‑on‑Trent Borough) launched a £16.9 million public‑realm project centred on King Street, featuring planting beds, widened steps, a one‑way traffic system, free short‑stay parking and upgraded street infrastructure. Both initiatives are presented as part of ongoing efforts to improve safety, attractiveness and economic vitality in the region’s town centres.
