Derby City Council proposes pedestrianising historic Strand to boost footfall

Derby City Council is planning to turn The Strand, a historic Victorian street in the city centre, into a pedestrian‑only zone. The proposal is part of a wider public‑realm strategy aimed at increasing footfall around cultural venues such as the Derby Museum and Art Gallery and nearby night‑time venues. The 75‑page report outlines additional changes, including making the Wardwick a two‑way road, relocating the memorial garden near Derby Cathedral, narrowing Full Street and removing parking, creating a new entry to the River Gardens by the Council House, and improving public spaces around St James Street, Sadler Gate, Friar Gate and the new Vaillant Live performance venue. The first‑phase projects are slated for discussion at a council cabinet meeting on 5 August. Council leader Nadine Peatfield said high‑quality public spaces are vital for the city’s character and success, adding that the plan will encourage longer visits, support local businesses and showcase Derby’s heritage.
