Desenrola Brasil drives massive debt renegotiations across Brazilian banks
The Desenrola Brasil program is facilitating significant debt renegotiations across the Brazilian banking sector. In the state of Paraíba, Banco do Brasil has already renegotiated over R$ 273 million through the initiative, involving more than 13,000 agreements across family, rural, student (Fies), and business categories. The program offers discounts of up to 90% and installment plans of up to 48 months for debts contracted up to January 31, 2026, that are between 90 days and two years overdue.
Nationally, major banks are participating in the program to address rising household indebtedness. Itaú Unibanco, for example, has renegotiated R$ 1.1 billion in debt, reaching 371,000 clients. While banks have welcomed measures for defaulters, there is reported resistance regarding a version of the program intended for consumers who are currently up to date with their payments. Despite the program's reach, major financial institutions have seen net provisions for bad debts increase by 23% annually compared to the previous semester, reflecting continued caution in credit granting.
