Brazil: New vehicle payment and tolling updates
Several updates regarding vehicle regulations and infrastructure have been announced across Brazil. In Rio Grande do Sul, DetranRS has implemented a new functionality allowing citizens to pay vehicle debts, such as IPVA, fees, and traffic fines, in up to 12 installments via credit card. This system, integrated with Serpro, uses Gov.br for identity verification and biometric validation to ensure security.
Mato Grosso is expanding its electronic tolling infrastructure through the ‘free flow’ system. This technology allows for proportional charging based on the distance traveled without requiring vehicles to stop at physical toll plazas. The system is active on the MT-130, operated by Rota dos Grãos S.A., and has been authorized by Ager-MT for the MT-020 and MT-326 highways between Paranatinga and Canarana. Payments can be made via electronic tags, PIX, credit/debit cards, or service totems within 30 days.
In Mato Grosso, vehicle owners with license plates ending in 0 must complete their 2026 licensing by October 31. This requires settling the licensing fee, IPVA, and any outstanding fines. Additionally, in the Baixada Santista and Vale do Ribeira regions, drivers have until November 16 to settle electronic toll debts incurred during the free flow transition period to avoid fines or points on their driver's licenses (CNH).
