Germany implements nationwide alcohol ban at railway stations

Deutsche Bahn has implemented a nationwide ban on alcohol consumption at approximately 5,700 railway stations across Germany. Effective as of October 15, 2026, the regulation covers station interiors, platforms, and, in some cases, station forecourts owned by the company.

The measure aims to improve safety and cleanliness, reducing conflicts and litter. The decision follows incidents of violence, including a case in Baden-Württemberg where a security worker was injured by an intoxicated passenger. While consumption is prohibited on platforms, exceptions remain for station restaurants, onboard bistros in trains, and for passengers carrying sealed alcoholic beverages in their luggage.

Enforcement will be managed by Deutsche Bahn security under the company’s right of admission, with officials instructed to use “discretion” and “tact.” Violators may face warnings, being asked to leave, or house bans. While the police union (GdP) has welcomed the move as a necessary step to curb aggression, social advocacy groups have raised concerns regarding the impact on homeless individuals with addiction issues.
