Deutsche Bahn implements nationwide station alcohol ban

Overview

Deutsche Bahn has implemented a nationwide ban on alcohol consumption across approximately 5,700 railway stations in Germany, effective October 15, 2026. The regulation covers station interiors, platforms, and, in some cases, station forecourts owned by the company to improve safety, cleanliness, and noise levels.

The decision was driven by feedback from passengers, employees, and municipalities, as well as specific safety concerns. For instance, Leipzig’s main station reported 859 incidents of violence in 2025, and a recent incident in Baden-Württemberg saw a security employee seriously injured by an intoxicated passenger. Deutsche Bahn officials noted that previous bans at roughly 40 major stations had already resulted in reduced litter and fewer conflicts.

The ban does not apply to the transport of sealed beverages or consumption within station-based gastronomy, such as restaurants and bars, or onboard dining services. However, once passengers move from these establishments into public station areas, the prohibition applies.

Enforcement is being managed by security personnel using discretion, with officials instructed to use “discretion” and “tact.” Repeated violations may result in house bans, and the Federal Police may assist in enforcement. While the police union (GdP) has welcomed the measure as ‘absolutely necessary’ to curb aggression, advocacy groups for the homeless have raised concerns. These groups argue that stations serve as vital sheltered spaces for vulnerable populations and that the ban does not address underlying addiction or housing issues.

In the first week following implementation, security forces identified approximately 5,000 individuals in possession of alcohol. DB Chief Evelyn Palla described the initial results as positive, noting that most individuals were compliant after being instructed on the rules. To support the policy, Deutsche Bahn increased its security staff from 4,500 to 5,000 employees compared to the previous year.
