Deutsche Bahn plans regional train cuts between Augsburg and Munich

Deutsche Bahn (DB) plans to reduce regional train services on the route between Augsburg and Munich starting in 2028. The rail company's subsidiary, DB Infrago, has identified the Munich rail hub and surrounding routes to Augsburg, Ingolstadt, and Rosenheim as overloaded.

To improve punctuality and reduce delays on the aging rail network, DB Infrago proposes cutting twelve regional connections. Under the new plan, a maximum of two regional trains per hour in each direction would be permitted during peak morning and afternoon hours, down from the current three or four connections. The reduction is intended to create capacity for 19 additional long-distance ICE services.

The proposal has met significant opposition. Arverio, the Augsburg-based company operating regional trains on behalf of the state, and the Bavarian state government have both filed vetoes against the planned cuts.
