Devasish Sharma wins Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll

Devasish Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, securing a decisive victory in a constituency where Muslim voters comprise approximately 62% of the electorate.

According to election data, Sharma secured a significant vote share, defeating Badruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Reports indicate Sharma won by a margin ranging between 142,224 and 157,804 votes. The Congress candidate, Sibamoni Bora, finished in third place with a minimal share of the vote.

Following the results, Sharma attributed his success to sustained constituent engagement and the guidance of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He also suggested that Ajmal’s campaign relied on communal appeals that were ultimately rejected by voters. Chief Minister Sarma described the mandate as a triumph of development over polarization, stating that the result reflects faith in the central government’s vision.
