Deventer launches heat program to phase out natural gas by 2050

The municipality of Deventer is developing a Heat Program to transition toward a natural gas-free city by 2050. The initiative focuses on two primary tracks: supporting residents with home insulation and establishing sustainable, gas-free heat supplies.

Depending on the specific neighborhood, the municipality will evaluate whether a heat network or individual electric heat solutions are most technically and financially viable. For example, a sustainable heat network is already being implemented in the Zandweerd district.

To meet national climate agreement goals, Deventer aims to insulate 18,000 homes and transition 14,500 homes to gas-free alternatives by 2036. Alderman Marcel Elferink noted that the program aims to increase energy savings, keep energy bills manageable, and reduce dependence on foreign gas.
