Women's Bundesliga to become independent from DFB in 2027
The German Football Association (DFB) has reached a historic decision to spin off the Women's Bundesliga. Following a unanimous vote at an extraordinary DFB Bundestag, the top-tier women's league will become an independent entity, managed by the newly formed FBL e. V., starting from the 2027/28 season.
This structural shift aims to professionalize the league, mirroring the model used by the men's Bundesliga (formerly DFL). Under the new arrangement, the DFB will maintain responsibility for the second division, while the FBL e. V. will handle the organization and marketing of the first division. A long-term agreement has established the legal and financial framework between the two organizations through 2034, including an annual payment of 1.4 million euros from the DFB to the FBL.
