German women's Bundesliga organizational restructuring

Overview

The organization of the German women’s Bundesliga is undergoing a structural transition toward independence. Katharina Kiel, president of the newly established league association FBL, has advocated for the implementation of minimum salary requirements to ensure the professional status of players and the long-term viability of clubs in the top flight.

Following these developments, the DFB-Bundestag unanimously decided to spin off the management of the Frauen-Bundesliga to the FBL e. V., effective July 1, 2027. A framework agreement has been established to govern the relationship between the DFB and FBL through June 2034. In September 2026, details regarding the financial arrangement were clarified, noting that the DFB will pay the FBL 1.4 million euros annually. While officials described the restructuring as a “significant directional decision” and a milestone for professionalization, some club representatives have expressed caution. Vanessa Bernauer of VfL Wolfsburg noted that while the move is a historic step, the “real work and challenges regarding competitiveness and investment begin now.”

As the 2026/27 season progresses, competitive action continues with FC Bayern München maintaining a strong start as defending champions, while TSG Hoffenheim recently secured a 2-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg, marking Wolfsburg's first defeat of the season.
