DGNB introduces sustainability certification for exhibition stands

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB) has released a new guide titled ‘Nachhaltige Messestände: Leitlinien für Planung, Umsetzung und Betrieb’ to address the environmental impact of trade fair stands. The initiative aims to transform the exhibition industry by promoting sustainability through better planning, material use, and logistics.

The guide focuses on three key areas: stand design and communication, material and resources, and operational management. It encourages circularity by promoting modular construction, the reuse of components, and minimizing single-use materials. It also emphasizes accessibility and inclusive design in stand layouts.

Building on this guide, the DGNB will launch a streamlined certification process starting in January 2027 at the BAU trade fair in Munich. This certification is designed for exhibitors, designers, and construction companies to validate their sustainability efforts. Registration for the new process is open until November 29, 2026.
