Adani Power and Bhutan's DGPC sign 770 MW hydropower deal
Adani Power and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have signed an agreement to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project in the Zhemgang District. The project will be executed under a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model with a 49:51 equity split, giving DGPC a majority stake. The partnership includes a 30-year concession period starting from the date of commercial operation.
Construction is slated to begin in the first half of 2027, with commissioning expected within six years of groundbreaking. This agreement is the second major collaboration between the two entities, following the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project agreement in September 2025. It is part of a broader strategic partnership aimed at developing 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan.
The project is intended to bolster Bhutan’s energy security, particularly during peak winter demand, while allowing for the export of surplus green energy to India during the summer months. Adani Power Managing Director Anil Sardana and DGPC Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin both noted the project's role in accelerating South Asia’s energy transition and enhancing regional energy security.
Separately, DGPC is also conducting public consultations for the proposed 104 MW Dangchhu Hydropower Project in Wangdue Phodrang, a joint venture with India’s Carbon Resources.
