Adani Power energy sector expansion

Overview

Adani Power has expanded its presence in the energy sector through both acquisitions and international partnerships. In September 2026, the company received a Letter of Intent to acquire GVK Energy, which operates a 330 MW hydroelectric plant in Uttarakhand, pending regulatory approvals.

By October 2026, Adani Power formalized its partnership with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) by signing an agreement to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project in the Zhemgang District. This project utilizes a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model with a 49:51 equity split, granting DGPC a majority stake and a 30-year concession period from the date of commercial operation.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027, with commissioning expected within six years of groundbreaking. This agreement follows a previous collaboration between the two entities for the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in September 2025 and is part of a broader strategic goal to develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan. The project aims to bolster Bhutan’s energy security during peak winter demand and facilitate the export of surplus green energy to India during summer months.
