DGT announces new motorcycle safety requirements and fines

New regulations from the DGT will introduce mandatory safety requirements for motorcyclists starting October 1, 2026. Under Royal Decree 518/2026, failure to comply with certain equipment standards could result in a 200 euro fine.

Key changes include a requirement for both drivers and passengers to wear closed footwear that covers the entire foot on all types of roads. Additionally, protective gloves will become mandatory when riding on interurban roads (outside of urban areas). The reform also includes updates regarding reflective vests, helmets, and shoulder driving, though specific implementation dates for all measures may vary.
