DGT introduces new safety regulations for motorcyclists in Spain

The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is updating the General Traffic Regulations, effective October 1, to enhance safety for motorcycle and moped riders. The new rules mandate the use of closed footwear on all roads, effectively banning sandals and flip-flops. Additionally, protective gloves will become mandatory when traveling on interurban roads.

Failure to comply with these new requirements for closed footwear or protective gloves will result in fines of 200 euros. The regulations apply to both drivers and passengers.

Regarding safety equipment, the update also emphasizes the use of certified helmets. While certain quality certificates may no longer suffice, riders have a grace period until October 1, 2027, to ensure all protective gloves and accessories meet the required official standards.
