DGT launches Spanish road safety campaign targeting driving distractions

The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is launching a new surveillance and awareness campaign to combat driving distractions, specifically focusing on mobile phone use. The campaign is scheduled to run from Monday, October 5, to Sunday, October 11.

Recent enforcement data from the Cádiz province shows the impact of these behaviors. During previous campaigns in 2024 and 2025, local police in 14 municipalities reported 413 infractions for distractions after inspecting 4,786 vehicles, including 200 offenses for mobile phone use. Additionally, the Guardia Civil de Tráfico inspected 14,499 vehicles in the same region, issuing 340 distraction-related citations, 140 of which involved mobile device manipulation.

Local authorities, including the Albacete Local Police, have joined the initiative to increase road safety in urban and interurban environments. Officials warn that distractions—including mobile phones, fatigue, and improper use of GPS—significantly increase accident risks by causing manual, visual, and cognitive lapses in attention.
