European road safety enforcement against driver distraction
Overview
The ‘Focus on the Road’ initiative, coordinated by the European Roads Policing Network (ROADPOL), remains active through October 11, 2026, targeting driver distractions from mobile phones and electronic devices.
In France, the Ministry of the Interior is expanding a nationwide pilot program to all departments, allowing for the administrative suspension of driver's licenses for up to six months for those caught holding a phone while driving. Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) continues its surveillance campaign following high infraction rates in Cádiz province. Other participating nations maintain specific focuses: Hungary on social media and video consumption; Croatia on seatbelt compliance; Slovenia on equipment impairing control; and Serbia on pedestrian mobile device use.
Recent enforcement in Poland and the Czech Republic has highlighted a surge in various traffic offenses. Polish authorities continue to address speeding, intoxication among motorists and cyclists, and the ‘Bezpieczni 60+’ campaign for senior road safety. In the Czech Republic, police have targeted high-speed violations, including an instance where an 18-year-old driver was caught traveling at more than double the speed limit in a residential area, leading to immediate license seizure. Czech enforcement has also addressed vehicle theft and illegal tuning meets.
