Dhaka introduces color-coded e-rickshaw zones

The Bangladesh government has announced a new regulatory framework for battery-run rickshaws (e-rickshaws) in Dhaka. To manage movement, the capital will be divided into eight distinct zones, with four zones assigned to the Dhaka North City Corporation and four to the Dhaka South City Corporation.

Each zone will feature e-rickshaws of a specific color, and vehicles registered in one zone will be prohibited from operating in others. While a formal driving license will not be mandatory immediately, drivers will initially be issued identification cards as part of a phased licensing system.

Registration for 13 city corporations nationwide is set to begin. Fees for two-passenger e-rickshaws are fixed at Tk 8,000 with a Tk 4,000 annual renewal, while four-passenger models require Tk 10,000 for registration and Tk 5,000 for renewal. Annual renewals will require a mandatory fitness certificate.
