Dhaka police arrest suspect in student kidnapping and ransom murder

Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested Abdullah Al Mamun, also known as Mamun Sarkar, in connection with the murder of 17-year-old student Rakibul Islam. The victim, who had moved from Tangail to Dhaka to prepare for university admissions, went missing on September 16 after being lured to a location via WhatsApp.

Following the disappearance, the suspect demanded a ransom of 1.5 million BDT. The victim's family reportedly paid a total of 400,000 BDT through various mobile banking services in an attempt to secure his release. During a struggle to extort the money, the suspect killed the teenager by breaking his neck.

To conceal the crime, the suspect placed the body in a carton and transported it from Dhaka to a betel nut garden in Dimla, Nilphamari, where it was buried. Police recovered the body following the arrest of the suspect, who was identified through digital investigation of the WhatsApp numbers used to demand the ransom.
