DHL Group opens automated sorting center in Lohfelden

The DHL Group has officially inaugurated its first mechanized mail and parcel distribution center located along the A49 motorway in Lohfelden, near Kassel. The facility features a fully automated sorting system designed to increase speed and reliability by assigning parcels to specific delivery districts via a central computer and conveyor belts.

This automation aims to reduce the physical burden on delivery staff, who previously had to sort parcels manually in teams. According to the works council, delivery personnel previously had to carry an average of 31.5 kilograms. The 2,400-square-meter center currently employs 135 people and services 80 delivery districts, handling an average daily volume of approximately 49,000 letters and 9,800 parcels.
