DHL logistics infrastructure expansion in Germany
Overview
DHL is expanding its logistics and distribution capabilities across Germany through several infrastructure projects and technological upgrades.
In Cologne-Marsdorf, DHL Express opened a new facility following a 40 million euro investment. The site includes 5,500 square meters of production and office space and features a high-tech sorting system capable of processing up to 6,000 packages per hour. The facility incorporates sustainable technologies such as a photovoltaic system, a heat pump, and electric vehicle charging stations.
In Thuringia, DHL Supply Chain is constructing a 30,000 square meter warehouse in Apolda, which is expected to be completed in March 2027. This site aims to support sectors including healthcare, semiconductors, and electric batteries, with a goal of achieving Gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council.
Additionally, the DHL Group inaugurated a mechanized mail and parcel distribution center in Lohfelden, near Kassel. This 2,400-square-meter facility utilizes a fully automated sorting system to increase speed and reduce the physical workload for delivery staff. The center currently employs 135 people and handles an average daily volume of approximately 49,000 letters and 9,800 parcels.
