DHL logistics center in Leizen evacuated over suspected mercury contamination

A DHL logistics center in Leizen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, was evacuated and cordoned off following reports of a potential mercury contamination. The incident was triggered after a 50-year-old delivery worker reported physical symptoms that appeared to resemble poisoning, which she believed were linked to contact with a liquid found on a package the previous Friday.

Emergency services, including police and specialized fire department units, secured the site and several packages. While initial suspicions pointed toward highly toxic mercury, subsequent laboratory analysis determined the substance was actually Galinstan, a mercury-free metal alloy.

Following the findings, the facility has been cleared for reopening. Authorities noted that while the immediate danger was mitigated, investigations into the origin of the substance and the circumstances of the contact continue. DHL stated that the safety of its employees remains the highest priority.
