Mercury contamination incidents in Germany
Overview
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, a series of incidents involving suspected mercury contamination has prompted hazardous materials responses. The situation began in Neustadt-Glewe when two women were hospitalized with nausea, dizziness, and headaches after opening a rose bouquet that appeared to be contaminated with a silvery liquid. The contamination was severe enough to cause liquid to drip from the packaging, leading police to evacuate an apartment building.
Following this event, a DHL logistics center in Leizen was evacuated after a 50-year-old delivery worker reported physical symptoms that police stated “could be consistent with mercury exposure.” The worker suggested her symptoms might be linked to contact with a liquid encountered during her work the previous Friday. Emergency services and specialists cordoned off the facility and evacuated more than 20 employees, suspending operations while investigators examined at least three potentially contaminated packages.
Subsequent laboratory analysis has since determined that the substance involved in the Leizen incident was not mercury, but Galinstan, a mercury-free metal alloy. Following these findings, the facility has been cleared for reopening. While the immediate danger has been mitigated, authorities are continuing investigations into the origin of the substance and the circumstances of the contact. Investigations into whether there is a connection between the Leizen incident and the previous flower delivery case in Neustadt-Glewe remain ongoing.
