Dhruv Rathee and CJP leaders detained ahead of Delhi protest

Ahead of a planned Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar, Delhi authorities implemented heavy security measures, including the deployment of approximately 25,000 police and paramilitary personnel. The protest sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls.

During the security crackdown, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was taken into custody from his residence in Gurugram. Rathee later released a video alleging he was “kidnapped” by approximately 20 people in plain clothes rather than formally arrested, claiming he was denied access to a lawyer or phone. He also addressed citizenship rumors by displaying his Indian passport. Following his release late Saturday night, police issued a warning that further legal action would be taken if he attempted to join the protest.

CJP founders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das were also detained upon arriving at Delhi airport from Mumbai. They were later released by an executive magistrate on the condition of maintaining public peace. The Supreme Court has since questioned the legality of detaining peaceful protesters and the restrictions placed on metro and internet services in the capital.
