DHS investigation reveals unprecedented migrant detention conditions in Florida

An internal investigation by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General has revealed unprecedented practices at the ‘Alcatraz with Alligators’ migrant detention center in Florida. The facility, which operated from July 2025 to June 2026, utilized microscopic metal cells measuring approximately 1.67 square meters.

Between July 2025 and January 2026, 79 individuals were confined in these cells for periods ranging from a few minutes to nearly two hours. The report describes this practice as ‘unprecedented’ among detention centers inspected by the service. While staff characterized the tiny spaces as ‘quiet rooms’ intended to allow detainees to be alone and rest, the report emphasizes that such confinement poses ‘great risks’ to health and fails to comply with regulations regarding the respect for human dignity.

In addition to the use of these cells, the investigation identified severe deficiencies at the facility, including overcrowding, lack of medical care, and poor sanitary conditions. The report notes that although staff claimed guards did not lock detainees in the cells, locks were installed on the doors. The facility had been visited by Donald Trump shortly after its opening.
