DHS investigations into Florida migrant detention centers

Investigations by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General have uncovered systemic issues and abuses within migrant detention facilities in Florida.

At the Krome detention center, an unannounced visit in May 2025 revealed the facility was operating at 25% over its maximum capacity, housing 1,102 detainees. This overcrowding led to detainees sleeping on temporary cots and a shortage of functioning sanitary facilities. The investigation also documented 44 incidents of staff force between November 2024 and May 2025, including the improper use of a chokehold and pepper spray, which inspectors characterized as excessive.

Separately, an investigation into the ‘Alcatraz with Alligators’ facility, which operated from July 2025 to June 2026, revealed the use of microscopic metal cells measuring approximately 1.67 square meters. While staff described these as ‘quiet rooms’ for rest, the DHS report labeled the practice ‘unprecedented’ and noted it posed ‘great risks’ to health and violated regulations regarding human dignity. The report also cited overcrowding, poor sanitary conditions, and a lack of medical care at that location.
