José Loreto normalizes diabetes management on screen

Brazilian actor José Loreto has gained attention for his decision to normalize the use of glucose monitoring technology by leaving his continuous glucose monitor (CGM) sensor visible during his role in the TV Globo soap opera ‘Quem Ama Cuida’. Loreto, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 14, stated that he wants to reduce the stigma surrounding the device and show that the condition can be managed as a natural part of daily life.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition where the body cannot properly produce or use insulin, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, requiring lifelong insulin use. Type 2 is more common and often involves insulin resistance. If left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to severe complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, neurological issues, and vision loss.

Modern management often involves continuous monitoring sensors that track glucose levels in interstitial fluid, providing real-time data and trends to a smartphone or reader. While these sensors provide critical data to prevent hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, they do not administer insulin; patients with type 1 diabetes must still manually apply insulin to regulate their blood sugar.
