Diabetes prevalence in Italy reaches 3.8 million cases
The 19th Italian Barometer Diabetes Report reveals that approximately 3.8 million people in Italy are living with diabetes, representing 6.4% of the total population and 7.5% of the adult population. Over 90% of these cases are classified as type 2 diabetes.
Data shows a steady increase in prevalence, rising from 4.2% in 2005 and 5.4% in 2015 to the current 6.4% in 2025. While the raw increase is 52%, the growth remains significant at 23% even when adjusted for the aging population. Experts estimate that more than one million people in Italy may be living with the condition without a formal diagnosis.
The report, presented at the Senate, highlights challenges regarding cardiovascular risks, regional health inequalities, and the sustainability of the national health service. Health Minister Orazio Schillaci emphasized the need for integrated policies to promote health and address modifiable risk factors to manage this chronic disease.
