Diego Forlan suggests Luis Suarez return to Uruguay national team

Following Uruguay's group stage exit at the 2026 World Cup, interim manager Diego Forlan has suggested that Luis Suarez could return to the national team. The team's recent performance, which included draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde and a loss to Spain, led to the departure of former coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Forlan, a former teammate of Suarez during Uruguay's 2010 World Cup run, expressed high regard for the striker, stating, “I have huge respect for Luis and there is great trust between us. If he can be selected, he is an available solution.” While Suarez had effectively stepped away from international duty following the 2024 Copa America, the change in coaching staff may facilitate a comeback. Reports suggest a potential return could occur in September during friendly matches in Asia.
