Forlán interim, AUF search & Arrascaeta returns

Entities: Diego Forlán · Uruguay national football team · Santiago Espasandín · Marcelo Bielsa · Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF)

Overview

Following Uruguay’s 1‑0 defeat to Spain at the 2026 World Cup, Marcelo Bielsa resigned and former striker Diego Forlán was appointed interim coach on 13 July, with his contract running until the AUF elections in March 2027. The AUF’s shortlist for a permanent manager now focuses on Pablo Repetto and Sebastián Abreu, favouring a local appointment. In the national‑team camp, goalkeeper Fernando Muslera faced criticism, midfielder Manuel Ugarte’s ACL injury jeopardised a move to Manchester United, and several World‑Cup‑experienced Uruguayans returned to club football, notably Guillermo Varela, Nico De La Cruz, Giorgian Arrascaeta and Andrés Gómez. Diego Hernández signed with Brazil’s Sport Recife. At Flamengo, Arrascaeta, sidelined by a clavicle fracture suffered in April, entered the final phase of rehabilitation and resumed training. The club concluded its pre‑season on 17 July with a 4‑2 win over Olimpia, sealing an unbeaten inter‑season record. On 21 July Flamengo registered Arrascaeta for the upcoming Brasileirão fixture against Chapecoense, indicating he will be available but is unlikely to start. The team also copes with absences of Léo Ortiz, Lucas Paquetá and striker Luiz Araújo, while Nico de La Cruz is rested for the synthetic‑surface match. Flamengo returned to the Brazilian Serie A after the World Cup break with a 4‑0 victory over Chapecoense on 21 July, lifting the side to 37 points and keeping it seven points behind leaders Palmeiras. Pedro scored twice, Lorran added a third and an own‑goal completed the tally. The win coincided with Arrascaeta’s return after a three‑month injury lay‑off, confirming his availability for upcoming fixtures. On 31 July, Forlán’s interim mandate was extended to include Uruguay’s under‑20 squad, where he will oversee preparation for the South American championship that serves as qualification for the 2027 U‑20 World Cup.
