The Uruguay Football Association (AUF) announced on 6 August 2026 that former striker Diego Forlán will take over as interim head coach of the senior national team and also lead the under‑20 side. The appointment follows Marcelo Bielsa’s resignation after Uruguay’s disappointing group‑stage exit from the 2026 World Cup, where the team earned only two points from draws with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde and a loss to Spain.

Forlán, a 47‑year‑old legend who earned 112 caps and scored 36 goals for Uruguay, won the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup and the Copa América in 2011. His coaching résumé includes brief stints at Peñarol in 2020 (11 matches) and Atenas de San Carlos in 2021 (12 matches). The AUF described his return as “Diego Forlán returns home” and said the contract is interim, with the possibility of extension.

He will guide the senior side through the September‑October 2026 FIFA window, beginning with a friendly against Japan on 24 September in Miyagi, followed by a match versus South Korea. Simultaneously, he will prepare the U‑20 team for the 2027 U‑20 World Cup scheduled for Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
