Diego Forlán appointed interim Uruguay national team manager

Diego Forlán has been appointed as the interim manager of the Uruguay national football team and the head coach of the U-20 squad. His contract is set to run until March 2027, though he noted that his tenure may not extend beyond the upcoming Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) elections in March.

Forlán succeeds Marcelo Bielsa, who departed following Uruguay's group-stage exit from the 2026 World Cup. In his first press conference, Forlán addressed the possibility of recalling Luis Suárez to the senior squad. Despite Suárez having retired from international play in September 2024, Forlán stated, “If he is up for selection, to be able to have a player like him, who scores goals, has experience and shows it week in, week out, why not?”

Forlán's first matches in charge are scheduled for late September, including friendlies against Japan and South Korea. He expressed a commitment to integrating younger talent while maintaining a competitive environment for the national team.
