Dien Bien accelerates DNA sampling of unidentified martyr remains
Dien Bien province is accelerating a 500-day campaign to search for, collect, and identify the remains of unidentified martyrs. The initiative aims to complete DNA sampling for 4,594 graves across seven cemeteries by September 30, 2026.
To overcome logistical challenges, such as heavy stone grave covers weighing up to 700kg and limited space for heavy machinery, personnel from the Dien Bien Military Command have implemented technical innovations. These include a chain hoist system combined with supports and rollers to lift and slide grave covers safely without damaging the landscape. Additionally, improved stone grinding equipment has reduced the time required for grave restoration from 30 minutes to approximately 3 minutes per stone.
The campaign seeks to provide closure to families who have waited decades to identify the resting places of their loved ones.
