Vietnam intensifies war martyr remains identification

Overview

Vietnam is intensifying its “500-Day-and-Night Campaign,” led by National Steering Committee 515, to locate, collect, and identify the remains of soldiers lost during past conflicts. The initiative addresses an estimated 175,000 missing personnel and 300,000 sets of unidentified remains.

As of late August 2026, the campaign has mobilized 32 search and recovery teams, including 19 operating overseas in Laos and Cambodia, involving approximately 1,559 personnel. To date, 1,863 sets of remains have been recovered. To facilitate identification, biological samples have been collected from 148,601 graves, reaching 69.8% of the target. On August 21, a military CASA-295 aircraft transported 7,104 biological samples, weighing approximately 1,300 kg, from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi for DNA testing at the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

In Da Nang, authorities held a ceremony on October 13 to inter 14 sets of martyr remains at the Hoi An Martyrs Cemetery. These remains were recovered between October 2 and October 5 following information from local residents regarding burial sites in the Thanh Tay and Vong Nhi residential areas. Nine of the recovered sets included personal artifacts such as blankets, hammocks, bone fragments, and teeth.

Efforts to locate specific groups continue, including a workshop in Hiep Duc commune regarding a potential mass grave of 30 to 40 martyrs. Additionally, the Da Nang and Tam Ky Military Commands have issued appeals for information, maps, or personal accounts to help locate soldiers lost during the 1968 Tet Offensive, particularly near the former Quang Tin provincial headquarters where records indicate 360 personnel were lost.
