Diesel engines remain viable in Italy's hybrid and used‑car markets

In the past year, diesel power has been re‑examined for hybrid applications. Three diesel‑hybrid configurations are in use: mild‑hybrid (MHEV) with a 48 V electric assist, full‑hybrid (HEV) where the electric motor can start the car and run short distances, and plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) that adds external charging for up to 120 km electric range. While the added cost, weight and complexity limit widespread adoption, manufacturers continue to offer diesel‑MHEV models, especially in Europe and Asia.

An automotive‑industry expert argues that, despite urban low‑emission zones and stricter emissions standards, diesel cars can still be the best choice on the used‑vehicle market. Diesel models often retain strong torque, lower fuel consumption on highways and have depreciated substantially, creating lower purchase prices. For high‑mileage drivers outside congested city centres, a well‑maintained Euro 6 diesel may offer the best cost‑of‑ownership, provided buyers verify engine health and local emission restrictions.
